Water Quality & Sustainable Design

The Clean Water Act (CWA), passed in 1972, is the cornerstone of Surface Water Quality protection in the United States.  The statute provides the use of regulatory and non-regulatory tools in the hopes of reducing direct pollutant discharges into surface waters and manages polluted runoff.  These tools are enforce in such a way as to protect surface waters so that they can support "the protection and propagation of fish, shellfish, and wildlife and recreation in and on the water.".  The CWA cleared the path for the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) and the establishment of Total Maximum Discharge Limits (TMDLs) for specific pollutants in protected watersheds.

In response to the Clean Water Act and the NPDES Phase I and II enactments, sustainable design has become a buzzword in the engineering community.  M-III Engineering has set itself apart from other engineering firms by developing a green culture from within the company.  This culture of M-III begins with the President of the company, Mr. Jose F. Martinez III, and his goal of staying at the cutting edge of the water quality engineering and development fields.  Mr. Martinez currently holds three (3) engineering degrees including a Masters degree in Water Resources and is currently pursuing his PhD with an emphasis on Urban Stormwater.  Mr. Martinez is also a LEED Accredited Professional and a Certified Professional in Storm Water Quality (CPSWQ).

M-III Engineering has a firm belief and understanding that development projects can have a quick turn-around, a high profitability margin, and still demonstrate positive stewardship of the environment M-III's use of Low Impact Design (LID), Structural BMP design and Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SPPP) have demonstrated innovated pollutant reduction schemes within projects that could not have been developed using conventional water quality methods due to discharge limits and project constraints.
